  • What is parent coaching?

    Parent coaching is specialized consulting that helps parents identify goals for their children in all areas of life, and develop strategies to reach those goals. Parents of children who are highly sensitive, impulsive, defiant, gifted, or strong-willed benefit from additional strategies to support their family.

  • What is Education Advocacy?

    Education advocacy is the process of helping families through the special education process to get support in school ranging from a Section 504 accommodation plan (e.g., extra time, preferred seating, breaks) to full special education support, an individual education plan (IEP), that modifies the curriculum, setting, or the way a subject is taught. The process can be complicated; and some schools are more cooperative and helpful than others.

  • What is the difference between an IEP and a 504?

    An IEP is an individualized education plan means a different setting, modified curriculum, or education delivery, is necessary for a student to make progress. Students qualify for this level of support based on extensive testing to identify deficits in qualifying areas.

    A 504 plan is an accommodation plan for necessary to support students in the mainstream curriculum because of a diagnosis or learning challenge.

  • What ADHD coaching?

    ADHD coaching is specialized coaching aimed at helping students develop organizational skills, improve focus, set priorities, break down assignments and reach their potential. The process begins with building a learning profile that identifies the student’s preferred learning style, cognitive strengths, and areas of weakness. The goal of the profile is to Identify the best support and accommodations, and to help students to take advantage of their strengths to overcome challenges.

  • What is Play Attention?

    Play Attention® is a computer based intervention that strengthens your ability to pay attention, organize, follow directions, remember, track visually, and plan. These skills transfer to classroom and life. Play Attention® uses NASA developed, neurofeedback technology to exercise these skills. Training takes about 30 minutes twice a week to show improvement over time. It take about 40 hours to achieve permanency of improved skills. Additional training is available for improving social skills, hand eye coordination, working memory, motor skills, and auditory processing.

  • Do I want an IEP or a 504 Plan?

    To determine the appropriate level of support, schools go through a mandatory process of identifying concerns, and then collecting information through observations, review of classroom records, and review of documentation from outside sources. Sometimes standardized questionnaires and formal testing by the school psychologist are also needed to determine what support a student needs to make academic progress. Using the information collected, teachers, and school administrators come together with parents and students to discuss what the best plan for the student will be. Advocates can be invited to help parents ask the right questions, set appropriate goals, and get the best support and accommodations available.

  • Does insurance cover these services?

    Health insurance does not cover coaching and advocacy services since they are not health related services. I do offer a sliding scale to reduce rates for families on public assistance, grandparents raising grandchildren, and independent college students. Credit cards are accepted and payment plans are available.

  • What is Bal-A-Vis-X?
